"The repoint is invisible from the porch."

Ray & Cindy H. · via Google
This season's deck
What we do

One crew for everything set in stone.

From a single accent corner to a full exterior renew, prep, work and protect, all under one roof. Every service below carries the same quality promise.

The honest call

Repoint, rebuild, or find the water?

Almost every masonry problem is a water problem wearing a disguise. Here is what each symptom usually means, before anyone sells you a wall.

Repointing

Joints go first. On purpose.

Signs
Crumbling, recessed or sandy mortar joints, brick still sound
Call
Grind and repoint, with mortar matched to the original

On older brick, modern hard mortar is a slow demolition, it must be softer than the brick. If nobody mentions mortar type, mention this.

Spalling & cracks

The brick is telling on the water.

Signs
Brick faces popping off, stair-step cracks, white bloom on the wall
Call
Find the moisture path first, then repair what it damaged

That white powder (efflorescence) isn’t dirt, it’s water leaving with minerals. Cleaning it without asking where it came from just resets the clock.

Chimney

The most weathered wall you own.

Signs
Cracked crown, loose bricks up top, rust stains, damp firebox
Call
Crown, flashing and joints checked together, they fail together

A cracked crown lets water into the stack where frost does the rest. Fixing bricks without fixing the crown buys one winter, not ten.

Retaining walls

Walls don’t lose to soil.

Signs
Leaning, bulging, soil washing through, no weep holes in sight
Call
Drainage behind the wall, then the structure

Retaining walls lose to water pressure, almost never to dirt. A rebuild without a drainage plan is scheduled to lean again.

Not sure which yours is? Photos of the wall, the joints and the ground below tell us most of the story before we visit.

The breakdown

What moves the number.

No mystery math. Four things decide what a masonry job costs, and we walk every one with you before the quote lands.

Condition & mortarGrinding out failed joints and testing to match the old mortar is the slow work, and most of the price. The brick just takes the credit.
Access & heightA wall at ground level is one thing; a chimney or a second story means scaffolding and careful staging.
Material & matchSourcing brick or stone that blends with what is already there, some are on the shelf, some we hunt down.
Scope & structureSquare footage, and whether it is cosmetic or structural, lintels, footings and permits carry honest cost.

Whatever the mix, you get one clear quote, in writing, before any work starts.

What a serious masonry quote includes, ours or anyone’s:
  • Mortar type named, matched to the age of the brick
  • The water source addressed, not just the damage
  • Brick sourcing: match plan for color and size
  • Retaining walls: the drainage plan, drawn in
  • Protection & cleanup: what touches your garden and siding
  • Workmanship warranty terms, in writing
Brick outlives everyone who touches it, when the mortar and the water are handled right. Those two lines are the whole trade.
On the job

Recent jobs

Real work, in plain numbers.

Three jobs from the past few months, what they were, where, and how long they actually took.

Brick repointing, full facade
Irvington·4 days

Raked the failed mortar back three-quarters of an inch on a 1912 red-brick front, then repointed with a type-N lime mix tinted to match the original joints. Struck concave to shed water and kept the old profile.

Stone retaining wall
Mt. Tabor·6 days

Forty feet of dry-stacked basalt on a compacted gravel footing, battered back into the slope with perforated drain pipe and clean crushed rock behind the whole run. Weep gaps left open at the base so water leaves, not pushes.

Chimney crown repair
Sellwood·1 day

Cracked wash crown demolished and recast in fiber-reinforced mortar with a proper overhang and drip edge, then a new stainless cap set over the flue. Sealed the crown-to-brick joint and the leak was done.

Where we work

Proudly serving the Portland metro

A lot of our work comes from a neighbor who watched us work the house next door. If you're in the metro, we're just around the corner.

Freeze-thaw is the mason’s weather here: water slips into a hairline in November and works it all winter — the reason small joint repairs in fall are the cheapest masonry you’ll ever buy.

How it goes

From first call to done.

No mystery in the middle. This is the path the job actually takes, start to finish.

01
The walkthroughday 1

A mason comes out, looks at the brick or stone up close, checks the mortar joints and any spalling, and measures the run. You walk the job together so we both see the same problem before anyone talks price.

02
Quote lands in writingwithin 48 hours

You get a clear quote on paper, broken out by area, with the mortar match and stone type named. No hourly surprises, no allowances that balloon later. The quote we give you is clear up front.

03
Material match and scheduling1-2 weeks out

We source the brick and stone and mix a mortar to match your existing color and joint, sampling it against the wall first. Then we lock a start date and tell you how many days the crew will be on site.

04
Crew on siteday of the job

The same masons who quoted the work show up, tarp the landscaping, and set up cleanly. They lay plumb, tool the joints to match, and keep the site tidy each evening so your yard stays usable.

05
Final walkthrough and cleanupbefore we leave

We walk the finished brick or stone with you, hose down and haul off every scrap and pallet, and hand you the written warranty on the masonry and mortar. Nothing is done until you have signed off standing in front of it.

Before you hire anyone

Five questions for every mason.

Including us. Brickwork done right outlasts the mortgage. These five questions find the masons who work that way.

01What mortar will you use on my brick, and why?

Old brick needs softer mortar than new brick, hard modern mix slowly destroys it. The answer should mention the age of your wall.

02Where is the water coming from?

Spalling, stains and white bloom are symptoms. If the quote fixes the damage without naming the source, you’ll meet it again.

03Can you match the existing brick and joint style?

Ask to see a match plan or a sample area. A patch that shouts is a repair you paid for twice.

04For a retaining wall: what’s the drainage plan?

Gravel, fabric, weep holes, pipe, some combination should be in the drawing. Walls fall to water pressure, not soil.

05How will you protect everything around the wall?

Grinding dust and cleaning rinses are part of the job. So is stating what covers your windows, plants and neighbor’s car.

Bring this list to the estimate. We’ll answer all five before you ask.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Getting started
Do you charge for estimates?+
No. Written estimates for every service and commercial plans are always free, we visit, measure, talk through material match and scope, and email you a clear, itemized quote with no obligation.
How soon can you start?+
Most estimates go out within a day, and typical projects are scheduled within one to two weeks. For urgent renews, before a move, a sale or an event, just tell us the date and we'll do our best to fit you in.
What does “free estimates” mean?+
Before any work begins, we give you one clear quote to approve, prep, materials and labor included. No hourly meter, no surprise add-ons at the end. You always decide before we start.
What should I do before you arrive?+
Point out sprinkler lines and anything fragile near the wall, then put the kettle on. Protection, layout and haul-away are our homework.
Do you handle permits?+
Yes, retaining walls over the threshold and structural work in Portland want them. We know the numbers, pull the paper and meet the inspector.
Can you price over the phone?+
A realistic range from photos, gladly. The quote needs the free walkthrough, mortar condition and what is behind the wall decide too much.
What happens during the free walkthrough?+
We probe joints, read the cracks, check crowns and flashing if a chimney is involved, twenty minutes, flat quote after.
Brick, stone & mortar
Why do you keep talking about mortar match?+
Because it decides whether a repair lasts. New mortar harder than old brick makes the brick sacrifice itself, faces pop off within winters. We test and blend to match.
Is my cracked brick dangerous?+
A hairline over a window usually means a tired lintel, cheap now, expensive ignored. Stair-step cracks want a foundation look first. We tell you which one you have, free.
How long does repointing take?+
Most houses run three to six days a face, weather honest. The written schedule lands before the first joint is ground.
Why is the chimney crown such a big deal?+
It is the umbrella. A cracked crown drinks rain into the stack and freeze-thaw does the rest, most chimney rebuilds started as a crown crack nobody saw.
Dry-stack or mortared for my wall?+
Dry-stack drains itself and flexes with the hill, mortared reads formal and wants engineered drainage behind. Height, soil and style decide, we walk you through it.
Which stone fits our place?+
Tap through the Stone Studio above, ledgestone, ashlar, brick blends, and the page takes each palette. Samples land against your actual wall before you sign.
Durability & guarantee
Will the repair be visible?+
Our standard is that you cannot find it in two years. Test panel first on repoints, matched brick sourced for patches, you approve before we commit the wall.
Do you haul debris away?+
Same day it comes off the wall, magnet-swept, and salvageable brick set aside, old brick is often worth keeping for the next patch.
Is the work guaranteed?+
Yes, in writing, workmanship warrantied. A joint that fails or a stone that moves brings us back first and free.
Is the Care Plan worth it?+
For most homes, yes: an annual inspection, free scuff and touch-up visits, priority scheduling, and 15% off future projects typically pay for the membership the first time you use it, and keep every finish looking new.
